Help & Getting Started

Quick start: 5 minutes to your first review
- 1
Take the level test
A short CEFR placement (~5 min) so Tilingu can pick sentences and grammar at the right level. You can retake it later from the badge in the navbar.
- 2
Pick a mode
General (free typing), an exam corpus (IELTS / TOEFL / YDS / YÖKDİL — shared word pool), or a community Pack. The small chip top-right of the navbar switches between them at any time.
- 3
Add or subscribe to words
In General mode use Add Word (AI fills in meaning, examples, IPA, audio). In Exam/Pack mode the words are already there — just start practicing.
- 4
Open Flashcard and start reviewing
The Learn button shows how many cards are waiting today. The number combines due reviews + new words up to your daily goal.
- 5
Hit your daily goal
The ring in the navbar fills as you progress. Reaching the goal extends your streak (top right of the dashboard).
Study modes — what they do
Flashcard (SM-2 spaced repetition)
Rate each card Again / Hard / Good / Easy. The algorithm picks when you should see the word next — forgotten words come back fast, easy ones get pushed out.
Quiz
Multiple-choice meaning check. Fast, good for warm-ups.
Fill in the blank (AI)
AIAI generates a fresh sentence with the target word blanked out. Tests active recall.
Write (AI)
AIYou write a sentence using the target word. AI scores you 0–100 on grammar, usage and naturalness, and saves grammar weaknesses for later practice.
Reading (AI)
AIExam-style paragraph generated from your own vocabulary, with fill-in-the-blank gaps.
Grammar (AI)
AILevel-appropriate grammar drills. The Grammar Learn page targets the weaknesses Write mode picked up.
How Tilingu decides a word is learned
Every word has a mastery score from 0 to 100. Different modes move it by different amounts:
- Flashcard correct = jumps to at least 65; wrong = full reset to 0 (a strong "I forgot" signal).
- Quiz / fill-in / reading = small but steady gains (+5 to +10).
- Write = up to +20 when the AI scores you well; under 50 counts as wrong.
- Reach 100 and the word is locked as mastered — it won't drop again.
