YDS Vocabulary Guide: The Words That Appear Every Year
YDS prioritises high-frequency academic + connector vocabulary. Here is what to study, in what order, and which traps to avoid.

YDS (Yabancı Dil Sınavı) tests a narrower range than IELTS or TOEFL, but it tests it deeply. The same ~3,000-4,000 academic words rotate year after year. Targeting them gives you outsized results.
What YDS tests
Vocabulary in context (cloze + sentence completion)
Reading comprehension of academic-style passages
Sentence-level grammar with vocabulary distractors
Paragraph completion and finding the irrelevant sentence
Notice what's missing: no Writing, no Speaking, no Listening. Pure reading + vocabulary.
High-priority categories
Phrasal verbs — YDS loves them. Come up with, put up with, take into account, look forward to.
Connectors — consequently, nevertheless, moreover, on the contrary.
Weeks 1-2: 200 high-frequency YDS words from past exam analyses.
Week 3: 80 phrasal verbs.
Week 4: 60 connectors with example usage.
Weeks 5-6: Word + grammar combos — sentence completion practice.
Weeks 7-8: Paragraph-level practice — reading comprehension passages from old YDS exams.
Weeks 9-10: Full mock exams, timing practice, error analysis.
YDS traps to know
The right meaning in the wrong context. YDS will give you a word you know with a secondary meaning. Learn the most common 2 meanings of each word, not just one.
Distractor cognates. Words that look like Turkish but mean something different. Eventually ≠ "eventüel olarak". It means "in the end".
Filler answer choices. Two of the four options usually fit grammatically; only one fits semantically.
Practice the way YDS asks
Tilingu's exam mode for YDS pulls from a curated YDS word pool and tests in formats close to the real exam (fill-in-the-blank, reading, multiple meaning).
